Jello Porter Digital Collage 5.25” x 3.25”

One of my few pleasant memories of my days fighting the Turks in Gallipoli is of the colorful, if perpetually dour, jello porters. These young Turks passed among us toting massive jello molds fresh from some kitchen found down one or another endlessly winding street.

For pennies a tired and dirty soldier could get a revitalizing bowl of wiggling goodness. How the porters managed to keep the gelatin chilled remains a mystery to me. All I know is that whenever, Canaan, a sprite dark-skinned fellow cried out, “Jello Sahib!” I couldn’t help but smile.
