Hart and Peggy Collage 5.25” x 3.25”

The beginnings of my interest in the poet, Hart Crane lie in the grooves of a 33 1/3 r.p.m. album by a long-gone, almost entirely unknown British pop band named Interview. I first heard the song, Hart Crane in Mexico more than twenty five years ago. The lyrics, “Shouting to the idols of the Catholic Church, saying Peggy Cowley that hurts me,” set it apart from standard pop song material. Like the song’s inward spiral, my interest in Crane moved from general curiosity toward a tighter orbit. For more on Hart Crane read, Clive Fischer’s brilliant literary biography, Hart Crane: A Life. (Yale University Press, 2002).
