Esmerelda was more than just a decorated general to me. She was my muse, my business partner, my wife. Times were different then and her family did not look favorably upon our marriage. They could not fathom what she saw in me, a simple prestidigitator. Orphaned as a child, I knew no love before her. The night she appeared in the audience for my show, surrounded by her entourage, the toast of the town, her gaze fell upon me. Perhaps in trying to hypnotize her I saw more than just a general in exile, I recognized my salvation, my better half.
